IoT changes the society towards one. 1

In a recent IoT seminar *) 14 great presentations were given. The domain seems to easily expand and extend. But how about condensing and crystallizing the idea of the whole IoT? Intuitively, sounds hardly possible. I’ll still do my best.

The pictures below were shared in the keynote speech by Martti Mustajärvi, Principal Technologist of Nokia.  Thanks, Martti.)

Picking up one voice from the crowd of presenters, I take Martti Mustajärvi. Of his 20 slides, I consider these four slides as Martti’s key slides. From each, I then form a key conclusion in my own words. Finally I try to combine all of them into a simple mental model. Let’s see where we end up.

IoT changes the society by re-connecting everything in new ways. This creates an explosion of possibilities.

The cost and effort of creating all of this will be shared by so many stakeholders that no-one needs to face high costs. IoT is not like old networks  built by telecom operators or global industries. IoT is and will be built by everyone: every household, every active citizen. Including of course also the old network builders.

Currently, most objects around us send and receive zero data. When coffee cups and shoes start to share their stories, the amount of transferred data will explode. The explosion will not end but it will continue from decade to decade. And by decades I don’t mean tens of years. I mean numbers. Whatever was 10, will turn to 100, 1000, 10 000, 100 000, 1000 000, 10 000 000, 1000 000 000,…

You’ll be asking for more bandwidth, shorter latency times, lower signal strengths detected also indoors, lower power consumption. Ultra short latency times and ultra reliability. Things to receive and transmit data for 10 years, using just a small battery.

Why would I need a mobile goodput of 10 Mbps with latency times below 1 millisecond? Think of your self-driving car in highway speeds, making co-decisions with other cars. You will have the need. And don’t worry, all of the above you’ll get without even asking for it.

Telecom and IT R&D are working constantly 5-10 years ahead of the customer needs.  Most people have not yet needed the speed of 4G, the technology that was developed in 2002-2012. Currently, the telecom industry is focusing on 5G to be rolled out around 2020.

All the above open new business systems. These systems are often fundamentally different from what we are used to. Without owning anything physical yourself,  you may run global businesses where physical objects are managed and served.

Now, how to summarize that?

Myriads of objects communicating in more ways than you can imagine. For anything you can imagine, you can open a global business.  We will live in a society of rapid changes driven by our imagination.

From technology driven world we moved to information driven world. Now we dive into an imagination driven world.

In technology, new things and thoughts were spreading out physically, thus slowly. In the world of information networks, new concepts spread out quickly. Something happening here today affects people around the world within the same day, within hours, within minutes.

In the coming world of totally interconnected objects, new things happen instantly all over the world. Well, not instantly. The speed of light will truly be a limiting factor.

Not just “things” will be connected. Also we humans will be networked in new ways. So far, our input and output channels have been quite limited: mainly the mouth, the eyes, the ears and the 10 fingers.  The smartglasses and finger controls like the recently launched Nod, Ring or Fin are only a faint beginning. Your contact lenses will both have their own IP address, so will have your brains, your arm muscles, your heart. And they all communicate. We all communicate.

We will communicate with each other. With objects created by us. With our dogs and horses and any other animals we want to be connected with. The earth itself, and all its dynamic phenomena, from the soil below to the winds above us, and anything living or existing in between.

The way to this future may be long and full of surprises. But for sure we are on a converging path.
